비올라 로베르토 디아즈
비올리스트 로베르토 디아즈는 2005년 커티스 음악원의 총장으로 선임되며, 요제프 호프만과 에프렘 짐발리스트, 루돌프 제르킨과 같은 저명한 음악가로서의 수순을 밟고 있다.
그는 독주자로서 뛰어난 지휘자들과 세계 각지의 무대에 오르고 있으며, 크시슈토프 펜데레츠키와 에디슨 데니소프, 제니퍼 히그던, 리카르도 로렌츠, 로베르토 시에라 등 20세기와 21세기를 주름잡는 작곡가들과 함께 작업을 해오고 있다. 그가 녹음한 제니퍼 히그던의 비올라 협주곡 음반은 제60회 그래미 어워드의 최고현대음악작곡상을 수상하였다.
디아즈는 젊은 음악가들과의 활발한 작업을 통해 새로운 레퍼토리를 보여줌과 동시에 젊은 음악가들이 연주 경력을 쌓을 기회를 주고 있다. 그는 디아즈 트리오의 멤버로, 전 세계를 누비며 유수의 실내악단 및 피아니스트와의 협연은 물론 주요 축제 무대에도 오르고 있다. 더불어 낙소스와 아르텍, 브릿지 레코즈, 도리안, 님버스, 뉴 월드 등의 음반사와 수 차례 음반을 발매하였으며, 윌리엄 프림로즈의 비올라 편집곡 음반은 그래미 어워드 후보에 오르기도 하였다.
필라델피아 오케스트라의 수석 비올리스트로 10년 간 활동하였던 디아즈는 므스티슬라프 로스트로포비치가 이끌던 내셔널 심포니 오케스트라에서 수석 비올리스트로도 활동하였으며, 보스턴 심포니 오케스트라와 미네소타 교향악단의 단원으로도 활동한 바 있다.
로베르토 디아즈는 뉴잉글랜드 콘서바토리와 커티스 음악원을 졸업하였으며, 현재 프림로즈 아마티 비올라를 사용 중이다.
Viola Roberto Diaz
A violist of international reputation, Roberto Diaz is president and CEO of the Curtis Institute of Music, following in the footsteps of renowned soloist and directors such as Josef Hofmann, Efrem Zimbalist, and Rudolf Serkin.
As a soloist, Diaz collaborates with leading conductors of our time on stages throughout the world. He has also worked directly with important 20th and 21st century composers, including Krzysztof Penderecki, whose viola concerto he has performed numerous times with the composer on the podium and whose double concerto he premiered in the United States, as well as Edison Denisov, Jennifer Higdon, Ricardo Lorenz, and Roberto Sierra. His recording of Jennifer Higdon's Viola Concerto won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Classical Composition in 2018.
A frequent recitalist, Diaz enjoys collaborating with young musicians, bringing a fresh approach to the repertoire and providing invaluable opportunities to artists at the beginning of their careers. In addition to performing with major string quartets and pianists in chamber music series and festivals worldwide, he is a member of the Diaz Trio. His recordings include a Grammy-nominated disc of viola transcriptions by William Primrose for Naxos, as well as releases on the Artek, Bridge Records, Dorian, Nimbus, and New World labels.
In addition to his decade-long tenure as principal viola of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Díaz was also principal viola of the National Symphony under Mstislav Rostropovich, and was a member of the Boston Symphony and the Minnesota Orchestra.
Roberto Diaz is a graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music and the Curtis Institute of Music, where he continues to serve on the faculty, holding the James and Betty Matarese Chair in Viola Studies and the Nina von Maltzahn President's Chair. He plays the ex-Primrose Amati viola.
