테너 신동원

테너 신동원은 서울대학교 음악대학 성악과를 졸업하고 동대학원에 2년재학중 도미하여 인디애나대학 음대를거쳐 필라델피아 The Academy of Vocal Arts 에서 졸업하고 오페라 '아이다'에서 '라다메스'역으로 영국 코벤트 가든의 로얄 오페라 하우스에 화려하게 데뷔했다.

그는 같은역으로 오스트리아의 빈 국립극장, 독일의 베를린 국 립극장, 미국의 샌프란시스코극장, 필라델피아 오페라극장, 핀란드의 사볼리나 축제에서 공연하였으며 특히, 지휘자 Carlo Rizzi와 함께한 미국의 휴스턴 그랜드 오페라 공연과 이테리 트리에스테에서의 오페라 '삼손과 데릴라'에서 '삼손', 베르디 '레퀴엠'을 공연은 주목할만한 연주로 평가받는 공연이다. 또한 그는 독일 드레스덴 젬퍼오퍼에서 오페라 '일 트로바토레'의 '만리코'역을 맡아 지휘자 Fabio Luisi와 함께 공연함으로 굉장한 성공을 이끌어내었다.

테너 신동원은 또한 세계적인 오케스트라인 필라델피아 오케스트라와 세계적 피아니스트이자 지휘자인 Christoff Eschenbach와 함께 공연함과 동시에 미국 산타페에서 뉴욕 필의 상임지휘자인 Alen Gilbert와 오페라 '투란도트'의 '칼라프'역을 데뷔하면 서 유럽과 미국을 중심으로 활동하고 있다. 특히 2007년에는 호주 오페라단의 갑작스런 요청으로 오페라 개막 하루 전날 시드니에 도착하여 '칼라프'를 부름으로 드라마틱한 호주 데뷔를 만듬과 동시에 대중과 평론가들로부터 큰 찬사를 이끌어 낸바있다.

한국에서는 국립오페라단의오페라 '투란도트'중 칼라프역으로 데뷔하였고 오페라 '아이다중 '라다메스역을 함께 했다. 서울시오페라단, 대구오페라단등 여러 국내 오페라단들과 오페라 '아이다', '투란도트', '나비부인'등을 함께했다.

그는 메트로폴리탄 오페라 콩쿨, 리치아 알바네제-푸치니 콩쿨, 카루소 콩쿨, 쟈르쟈리 콩쿨, 팜비치 오페라 콩쿨 등 세계적인 유수의 콩쿨에서 우승을하며 그의 이름을 알렸고 그와 동시에 오페라무대에 화려하게 등장한 이력이 있다.

서울대학교 재학도중 테너 박인수 교수께 사사하였고 현재 수원대학교 음악대학 교수로 재직하며 후학을 양성하고 있다.

Tenor Dongwon Shin

Korean-born tenor Dongwon Shin has been singing the dramatic operatic repertoire for the last several years, including Tabarro with Opera Carolina, Manrico in Dresden and with the Arizona Opera, Fort Worth Opera, and Opera de Montreal, Radames at Covent Garden and at the Vienna Staatsoper to glowing reviews. He has performed the Verdi Requiem and Samson at the Teatro Verdi, Trieste, and debuted with San Francisco Opera as Radames. He also covered Dick Johnson in San Francisco’s Fanciulla. He sang his first Calaf in Turandot, which has become his signature role, with Santa Fe Opera in 2005, and has made subsequent appearances in that role with Dayton Opera, Montreal Opera, and Fort Worth Opera (“Tenor Dongwon Shin met the challenge on Saturday. His ‘Nessun dorma’ was the highlight of an incredible evening for him and for the Fort Worth Opera.”).

 In 2007, he made a dramatic debut with Opera Australia as Calaf, arriving the day before the opening and receiving both public and critical acclaim (“a superb Calaf with a wonderfully strong, fully Italianate voice, and brought the house down in Nessun Dorma”), and he was asked for a to return engagement two years later. Other notable performances include a “thrilling” Radames in the Savonlinna Festival’s Aida and his Italian debut as Samson in Lecce. He made his professional operatic debut in 2005 as Radames in Aida with Opera Company of Philadelphia. Dongwon has also sung with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Christoph Eschenbach in the Gala Concert celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Academy of Music. Other significant engagements have included Radames in Aida with Houston Grand Opera under Carlo Rizzi, the title role in Samson et Dalila with Dayton Opera, Canio in Pagliacci with Opera Delaware, Pollione in Norma with Michigan Opera Theatre, and the Verdi Requiem with the Delaware Symphony.

Dongwon distinguished himself early in many competitions including the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions (National Finalist), Loren Zachary, Licia Albanese Puccini Foundation Competition, Caruso-Altamura International Competition, Maria Anderson Competition, Giargiari Competition (First Prize and Audience Favorite). A 2005 graduate of the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, he sang the title role in Puccini’s Edgar and Gennaro in Lucrezia Borgia. Before attending AVA, he received a Bachelor of Music Degree from Seoul National University and subsequently attended Indiana University.

In May of this year, Dongwon returned to the U.S. for Radames in Knoxville Opera’s new production of Aida. (“Shin possesses a vocal instrument of surprising power…mastering contrasts with ease and with a reasonably attractive clarity; his opening aria ‘Celeste Aida’ was nicely handled despite its difficulty, while his Act IV tomb scene with Aida was a careful study in vocal control.” – Knoxville Arts, 05/06/2018)  Last year, he appeared as a special guest artist at Carnegie Hall in the Giuseppe Giacomini Opera Gala, singing selections from Trovatore and Aida, which were two roles that M° Giacomini sang with distinction. Coming up for Dongwon are performances of Cavaradossi, and he will continue his active concert and recital schedule in Seoul and throughout Korea.
