유럽 무대에서 “무슨 역이든 완벽히 그만의 캐릭터로 소화하는 배우”로 자신만의 독보적인 예술 세계를 구축해 가고 있는 리릭 소프라노 이명주는 아시아 필하모닉 오케스트라 아카데미 특별연주회에서 정명훈의 지휘로 오페라 '라 보엠'의 미미 역으로 출연한 이후, 그가 이끌었던 서울시향과 함께 광복절 기념음악회, 대통령 초청 신년음악회, 찾아가는 음악회, 정기 연주회였던 베토벤 교향곡 9번 '합창'과 말러 교향곡 8번 ‘천인교향곡’ 등 당시 거의 모든 공연에 초청되어 “정명훈이 선택한 소프라노”로 국내에 알려졌다.
특히 오페라 ‘라 트라비아타’의 비올렛타 역의 열연으로 세계적인 비주얼 아티스트이자 공연 예술계의 거장으로 불리우는 로버트 윌슨(Robert Wilson)으로부터 “비범한 목소리와 무대 장악력... 가장 큰 감동을 안겨준 소프라노”라는 극찬을 받았다.
서울예고와 서울대 모두 뛰어난 실력으로 실기 수석 입학하였으며 서혜연 교수를 사사하였다.
현재 국내외 주요 콘서트와 오페라 무대에서 활발하게 활동하고 있다.
Korean soprano MyungJoo Lee has been singing internationally on both concert and opera stages, since 2004. She has been heard in the United States at Carnegie Hall, in Europe at Munich’s Prinzregenten Theater, where she performed The Fairy Queen (Juno and Night) under conductor Christoph Hammer, and La Bohème (Mimì) under Ulf Schirmer. Following her successful performances, the German newspaper "Abendzeitung" twice named her “Star of the Week” [Der Stern der Woche].
In Asia, besides performances in China and Japan, MyungJoo Lee is a regular on Korean stages, singing with the country’s most prominent orchestras and companies. In 2008, her performance as Mimì (La Bohème) started an extensive collaboration with Maestro Myung-Whun Chung, who subsequently invited her to sing in the widely broadcast Commemorative Concert for the Anniversary of Korean Independence presented by the Seoul Philharmonic as well as numerous concerts including Beethoven’s Ninth and Mahler’s Second and Eighth Symphonies.
A graduate of Seoul National University under Professor He-Ion Seo. she was awarded first place in several competitions before completing her studies in Germany.
