피아니스트이자 지휘자, 작곡가, 실내악 주자, 교육가 등 다방면으로 활발한 활동을 하고 있는 마에스트로 랄프 고토니는 베를린, 잘츠부르크, 프라하 등의 세계적인 페스티벌에서 피아니스트로서, 혹은 지휘자로서 정기적으로 초대받아 세계적인 오케스트라들을 지휘하였다.
피아니스트로서 그는 피아노 협주곡과 솔로 피아노 곡 등의 작품을 매 해 12회 이상 초연하고 있으며, 2001-2009년에는 English Chamber Orchestra의 수석 지휘자로 활동했다. 뿐만 아니라 시애틀의 Northwest Chamber Orchestra의 음악감독으로 역임하였으며 베를린, 함부르크, 헬싱키, 런던, 마드리드 음악학교 등에서 후학을 양성하며 바쁜 일정을 소화하고 있다.
한편, 고토니는 세계 주요 음반사에서 100여장의 음반을 발표하여 성공을 거두었으며 음악 현상학에 대한 3권의 책들을 출판하며 음악에 대한 남다른 애정을 보여주었다. 1994년에는 음악계에서 가장 영예로운 상인 길모어 아티스트상을 수상하였고 이후 오스트리아 문화부에서 수여하는 슈베르트 메달을 수상, 2012년에는 스페인의 여왕으로부터 명예훈장을 받았다.
Ralf Gothoni, Conductor&Pianist
Ralf Gothóni has a many-sided worldwide career as pianist, conductor, composer and pedagogue. He became well-known for his unconventional way of music-making and about the wholeness of his musicianship. His tight concert schedule have included major festivals (Berlin, Edinburgh, Salzburg, La Roque de Antheron, Prades, Prague, The Proms, Ravinia, Seoul etc.), orchestras (Bayerischer Rundfunk, Berlin and Warsaw philharmonics, Detroit, Chicago and Toronto Symphonies etc.) and recording studios (c. 100 recordings for international labels).
Gothóni appears regularly both as a soloist and conductor, conducting often from the keyboard. He has premiered more than a dozen piano concertos (Tavener, Sallinen, Rautavaara, Curtis-Smith, Glick, Segerstam etc) and as a conductor he worked a.o. as the principal conductor of the English Chamber Orchestra in 2001-2009 and as the musical director of Northwest Chamber Orchestra in Seattle. In 2004 he was appointed as the guest conductor of Deutsche Kammerakademie. As chamber musician he performs regularly at the important festivals.
Gothóni has been professor for chamber music in Berlin, Hamburg, Helsinki, London, in Madrid at the Instituto de Musica Camara Reina Sofia and in Karlsruhe, Germany. He also gives master classes worldwide and is invited as juror at the major piano competitions.
Mr Gothóni’s repertoire as composer includes a chamber concerto for viola and orchestra, 1 hour chamber cantata for violin, piano and orchestra, 3 chamber operas, chamber music and songs.
In the 80's, during Gothóni's artistic directorship, the Savonlinna Opera Festival expanded to its format of today. In the 90-ties he was the initiator and artistic director of "The Forbidden City Music Festival" in Beijing and since 2007 he has directed "Musical Bridges" between Egypt, Aserbaijan, Turkey, Jordan and Finland. He has also been successful as a writer of three books with essays about musical phenomenology.
Mr Gothóni has been honored with many awards, including the American Gilmore Artist Award in 1994, which is one of the biggest awards in classical music, the Order of "Pro Finlandia" and the Schubert Medal of the Austrian Cultural Ministry. In 2012 he was honored in Madrid for his artistic and pedagogic activities by Sofia, the Queen of Spain.
